At its full output, this powerhouse reactor has the potential to supply electricity to a staggering 500,000 homes and businesses across Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.
The rise of nuclear power in Georgia has been evident, now constituting about 25% of Georgia Power’s energy generation. The growth is not set to stop here, with a fourth reactor currently near completion at the same site. Plant Vogtle’s previous two reactors have been serving the region with electricity for decades, and now the anticipation builds for Unit 4, slated to enter commercial operation in the coming months.
However, the journey to achieve this groundbreaking milestone hasn’t been without its challenges. The project’s initial estimated cost of $14 billion has more than doubled, projected to reach a staggering $31 billion for the third and fourth reactors. Adding to the ballooning expenses is the $3.7 billion that the original contractor, Westinghouse, paid to exit the project.

Almost every electric customer in Georgia will bear a portion of the financial responsibility for Vogtle’s reactors. Georgia Power currently owns 45.7% of the reactors, while the remaining shares are held by entities such as Oglethorpe Power Corp. and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia, among others.
As the third unit begins generating power, residential customers are bracing themselves for a monthly rate increase of $3.78. The move is necessary to cover financing costs and the ongoing construction of the fourth reactor. This follows a recent $16-a-month increase to compensate for higher fuel costs. The remaining costs of Vogtle, including the fourth reactor, are yet to be decided by the commissioners.
