As the year comes to a close, small businesses face a challenging landscape marked by plummeting sentiment. The Small Business Index, a collaborative effort by MetLife and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, reveals a substantial decline to 61.3, a 7.9 percentage point drop from the previous quarter. This decline is attributed to a combination of concerns over the near-term economic outlook, persistent worker shortages, and the ongoing challenge of chronic inflation.

Economic Uncertainty Takes a Toll

Small business owners are grappling with a worsening view of the U.S. economy. Only one-quarter express confidence in the national economic health, with a simultaneous 8 percentage point drop in the belief that their local economies are faring well. This return to low scores echoes sentiments from earlier in the year and late 2022, indicating a prevailing unease among small business owners.

Inflation Looms Large

Persistent inflation remains a primary source of concern, with 50% of small businesses identifying it as a significant challenge for the sixth consecutive quarter. Despite a slight dip in the consumer price index since its June 2022 peak, it continues to exceed the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. The staggering 17.23% increase in prices since January 2021 only compounds the worries for small businesses already navigating a challenging economic landscape.

Hiring Hurdles Persist

The struggle to attract and retain talent persists as a major obstacle for small businesses. With low unemployment rates and substantial wage increases, about 45% of small business owners report actively searching for new talent in 2023. Offering competitive pay and benefits remains a challenge for half of these businesses, while 60% find it challenging to meet existing employees’ salary expectations.

Optimism Amidst Challenges

Despite the overarching challenges, there’s a silver lining in the small business landscape. Two-thirds of small businesses maintain a positive outlook on their own financial health. The index indicates that despite the headwinds, many small businesses are navigating the turbulence successfully, with holiday shopping already breaking records and a majority reporting they are doing well.

In a year marked by uncertainty, small businesses exhibit resilience, facing challenges head-on while maintaining a degree of optimism about their individual prospects.
